    Pecan log splitter

I'm having a hard time splitting some pecan wood by hand, must be getting old. Thinking about buying a little log splitter, most of the little ones I find are 5ton. Is this going to be enough to split pecan? Don't really need a big one.

You don't need to worry about what type of wood you are splitting so much as how big of logs you are splitting. Oak will be the toughest with that said. With a small 5 ton you shouldn't have trouble with anything less than 8" inches and stay away from knots in the wood. If you split anything bigger you need about a 20 ton or larger.

I used a boss’s DR electric splitter mainly on Oak. As long as the wood wasn’t too dense and had dried enough it usually would split it. This particular tree was easily over 200 years old and about five feet in diameter at the base. When I tried to split wood that came from the trunk down lower, the splitter couldn’t handle the wood density.

I didn’t like having to use an electric splitter but the ranch owner wouldn’t replace it.

A 25 ton would be best and one that splits vertically would also be best for larger logs.
We bought a 25 tone many years ago and left it in Texas on a brother in laws place . He cuts wood for himself and us and splits it for us.
Big logs are hard to get on a horizontal splitter. A 4 way head works great on the splitter too.
Big investment but you can rent it out and make some money.

They also rent them at Home Depot. You can split a lot of wood with a 4 hour rental.

I've split a lot of wood by hand and I had difficulty with pecan as well. Oak and walnut splits really well and clean, not stringy.
If you can afford a splitter, do it !

This is kinda what I'm looking at. Just need something around the house, not gonna start cutting down trees for a living.

I bought one like that at harbor freight. And the oak logs just laughed at me and the splitter

                      I bought a hydraulic......

Yep, been telling people about old live oak wood, seems the stuff that has been dead for years gets even harder. That stuff is like petrified wood, what I always called it. Forget about cutting if up with a axe, now going to happen definitely not quickly. We had some old petrified Live Oak stumps in our back yard, where I grew up, I was given the project of removing them at one point, they were still there many years later after my parents sold the house.

Pecan and hickory, are not bad at all to split, if they are 12"-14" diameter or less. Not sure about those big trees, 2' or larger in diameter, I would bet they are about like old oaks, maybe not quite as bad a similar sized oaks. I find pecan usually has lots of worm holes in it, I have never found a piece of pecan that was very solid, because of the worm holes. Those big green worms make good fish bait.

In my experience with Pecan, it is very difficult to split. Even with log splitter, it is very “stringy” and the fibers must be pulled apart once you bust the rounds.

It's definitely not easy. It's already been split at least once, just still to big to be cooking size.
