I'm in the market for a new troll motor to mount on my 21' Kenner. I'm strictly freshwater. Both are 24V foot pedal troll motors. My old MotorGuide just gave up the ghost, after 23 years of service. Looking to replace it with another no frills troll motor. Anybody have any pros and/or cons of either?

I had a 70 lb thrust Edge years ago and it drove me nuts. The speed settings were the problem. It seemed like speeds 1-3 were very slow and 4-5 were full speed. It was hard to troll at proper fishing speeds. I have only bought variable speed trolling motors every since. That was so long ago that they may have changed since then.

“No frills trolling motor” is the way to go. I made the mistake of upgrading my 24 Nautic Star with the new Ulterra. It’s awesome...when it works right, which is rare so far. It’s back in the shop now because it would not deploy at all. Ive had it since Sept last year and this is the third trip to the shop. Just FYI... good luck sir!

I have a MinnKota 24volt 80# Great White on the bow of my 18 foot Aluma-weld tunnel drive bowgishing boat... In the wind, I wouldn't have anything less... sometimes wish I'd gotten the 36 volt 101# I think you'll be under-powered with a 12 volt unit of either brand, plus you'll be running it very hard a lot of the time if there is any wind at all... With the larger unit, you won't have to work it as hard and it should last better.
