Keep your mouth shut and get a grade, or confront?

This is WAY off topic to anything hunting or outdoors related, but I thought I'd throw it out there. My son is a sophomore at Tx Tech and is taking Political Science - one of those "101" classes with 2-300 kids in an auditorium setting. His prof is a leftist azz-clown. His version of balance and explaining both sides is saying things like "liberals care about the common man, conservatives only care about corporate profits" and " we need to get beyond thinking of Socialism as a bad word". Even the questions on his tests require answers that fall in line with his personal philosophy. It strikes me as intellectual bullying. (Which is easy when you are talking in front of a bunch of 19-20 year olds with heads full of mush, and you have a grade to hold over their heads.) It just so happens that like me, my son is a pretty knowledgable political philoshophy dork and has a libertarian/conservative worldview. He is very frustrated and keeps calling me and texting during class, asking if he should stand up and verbally undress this guy. I'm sure the prof is not used to being challenged and his lame bumper-sticker arguments would quickly fall apart. As much as it hacks me off too, I my inclination is to tell him keep his mouth shut, get a grade and move on. Is it worth it?

IMO he has a lot of life ahead of him, and the professor doesnt have as much. He should bite his lip, get the grade, move on, and make a difference in the world. he will not be able to sway this overly liberal, partially informing instructor, nor will your son be swayed. This class lasts a lot less time than the real world does!! Good Luck to your son, and I hope he can survive the madness!!

Can only hurt his GPA to challenge the Prof. Have him pick which sword to fall on. Make it later when it matters.

Yeah, trying to get a lib to listen to logic and reason and fact is an exercise in futility.

The only possible gain you get by speaking up would be the possibility of helping another student or two that are uninformed, yet capable of understanding rational thought. Perhaps your son can have some discussions with students outside of class without wasting time arguing with the lame brain prof.

Might be fun...but how many credits is the class???

Does he need it for his degree???

Might be better to just do the last "S" and move on.

I agree. It is only one class.

On the other hand, if he does start a debate, make sure he does not give his name. With 2-300 students, the prof wont know who is who.

That and most of the time with classes that big, it is the Teaching Assistant that is doing the gradeing......

But I have always been one to point out my point of view, at least once!!!

My fondest college memories (or at least those approved for posting here ) involve a couple of lib professors who seemed to be hell-bent on converting their students into meek little lib-bots. It takes surprisingly little to knock those guys down a peg or two, and if he's worth his salt as a prof, he'll appreciate the fact that your son has a mind of his own, the wit and courage to express himself, and the understanding that he's free to speak his mind as he sees fit. My .02

Consider this, if it all goes south, is it too late to withdraw and receive a "W"?

A United States Marine was attending some college courses between assignments. He had completed missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. One of the courses had a professor who was an avowed atheist and a member of the ACLU.

One day the professor shocked the class when he came in. He looked to the ceiling and flatly stated, "God, if you are real, then I want you to knock me off this platform. I'll give you exactly 15 minutes."

The lecture room fell silent. You could hear a pin drop. Ten minutes went by and the professor proclaimed, "Here I am God. I'm still waiting."

It got down to the last couple of minutes when the Marine got out of his chair, went up to the professor, and cold-cocked him; knocking him off the platform. The professor was out cold. The Marine went back to his seat and sat there, silently. The other students were shocked and stunned and sat there looking on in silence.

The professor eventually came to, noticeably shaken, looked at the Marine and asked, "What the heck is the matter with you? Why did you do that?"

The Marine calmly replied, "God was too busy today protecting America's soldiers who are protecting your right to say stupid stuff and act like an idiot. So, He sent me."

Ask your son if there are any Marines available in the class.

Get the grade, graduate with a degree, be successful.

He'll soon discover that this one class his freshman year doesn't even register on his radar anymore.

I'm in my senior year at A&M now and I've had a professor that I completely disagreed with on a subject. I tried to bring up my point of view in a non confrontational way to him one day and was quickly told that I was wrong he was write and it was easy to read between the lines he wrote that my grade was relatively dependant on me understanding that fact. Saying all of that in short what I am saying is that if it is something he feels he really should stand up for then go for it, you gotta go with your gut, but if its something that just annoys him then its much easier to let it slide.

Great advice. Not that I agree with it. But if your son challenges this prof. he will never win.

Other than making himself feel better, to confront this guy would accomplish nothing. No way he's gonna change the fool's mind and he's just setting himself up for some hard times. Sometimes you just gotta choose your battles.
