What is the role of the County Judge?

Specifically Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins? Honest question from a non-resident of Dallas County. I've looked online and find varying statements about the role of the County Judge in Texas. Clay Jenkins seems to be the point man for anything and everything he wants to be the point man on in Dallas County. Seemingly whether he knows anything about the subject or not. I would like to understand the role of the County Judge. Anyone?

A county judge is the mayor of the county but counties in Texas do not call it the mayor and city council but the county judge and commissioners court. It is in effect, the same thing.

Like a mayor, in an emergency the county judge can issue emergency management declarations and so on.

By Clay Jenkin's definition, a county judge is the chief publicity hound and grandstander. He's great at it.

That's the exact impression i have. I don't think i've ever heard another County Judge speak. Maybe i just haven't been paying attention.

I refer to them as County Chief Executives. The one is Harris county is completely unqualified for the position but hey she is a female hispanic so I stand corrected.

Remember when that unfortunate soul in Dallas died from Ebola? To calm the masses Judge Jenkins went to his apartment. If I remember right he stripped down to his skivvies and rolled around on the floor and licked the guy’s toothbrush to prove he weren’t skeered. (That may be an exaggeration but the guy is a showboater for sure)

I had the exact same question a few months ago. After a lot of research, the best way
I can phrase it is, “mayor of the county”.

I think maybe down south there's more unincorporated, county, areas than there are in D/FW. Maybe that's why the judges are more prominent down south? Now that i think about it more, Mike Moncrief used to be pretty prominent in Tarrant County back in the day. I have no idea who the County Judge in Tarrant County is right now.
