After getting our butts whipped yesterday, I decided to be a little more aggressive this morning. I knew our hunt would be over by 8am one way or the other. We’d either get a shot or the flock would pass us by
The birds use the exact same trail to get to our feeder up by the camp house. So we setup on that trail about 50 yards from the feeder. Sitting at the feeder wasn’t an option as it would be too hectic for Kayden to get a shot amongst 40+ birds. My hope was that the flock would pass us and the gobblers would stop at our decoys.
Like clockwork, the entire flock was heading our way at 7:50. But this time, 3 jakes were leading the way. The jakes ran straight to our decoys and started beating the jake decoy. Kayden asked me “are those daddy turkeys?” and when I said yes, she was ready to shoot. I clicked off the safety and she squeezed off.
Her turkey was behind the decoy with his neck stretched as he was pecking and posturing up the the decoy. It gave her a perfect target and her shot was perfect!
Immediately after the shot, she began shaking like crazy. It was awesome to see her so excited.
As a dad that turkey hunts, it doesn’t get any better!
Should be a good season for all! My grandson shot his first gobbler at 4 years old and has been hooked ever since. Last year at seven he got the only two gobblers killed on our lease.HA!
Haven't heard the last of that from everyone.
