    Electrical question

I have been changing out some of my ceiling fans. Old set up was a wall switch for lights and a switch for the fan. When installing these fans, I am wiring in a remote control. I have already mounted two fans and they work as designed. There were two hot wires at the box, so I capped and taped one making one wall switch useless.
The third fan has not worked in a long time. The lights worked, but the fan did not. I attributed this to a lightning strike close to my house that shorted out the computer board on my aerobic septic and this fan no longer working.
When I wired this fan the same way as the other two fans, the lights work but the fan does not. I hear the remote click at the fan, but the blades don't turn. I have tried swapping the hot wire and used the other wall switch. The wires coming from the remote to the fan are live when I check them with my contact tester.
It's a 15 amp breaker that has this fan, four wall plugs, and two other sets of lights. Everything else works.
I'm scratching my head. Besides having changed a few things out, I don't mess with electricity very often. Troubleshooting skills are not good.

    Electrical question

What kind of tester do you have?
Can you check voltage between hot and neutral?
My guess is you have a loose neutral somewhere (probably a push a pray plug). Making just enough contact for the lights to work but not for the fan.

Do the lights seem dim or do they flicker at all?
Any plugs not working properly or constantly? I’d check the make up at switch box first because you can do it standing up, but might be worth killing the breaker and seeing if the wires are just pushed into the back, and if so make sure all connections are tight or put them under the screws. Those push and prays are notorious for loose connections

Does the fan spin by hand? Ie. is anything prevent the fan from spinning? Did you turn the fan on using the remote and chain on the side of the fan?

Also, try wiring direct to the fan and make sure you don’t have a defective relay in the remote switch.

Check the directional switch if the fan has one, I could have been bumped or sitting between forward and reverse from the factory

The only tester I have is one that I can check and see if the electricity is on or off by touching the outside of the wire. Non of my plugs are the push and pray type. They all have screw terminals.
The lights are dim to me. The only ones we had to put in there were the candlelight style die to outlet size, we have bought new ones since.
I was thinking loose or bad neutral, but not comfortable enough figuring out where.
I have a friend that's an electrician and he wired up my outdoor bar for me. He's going to come by when our off days match up.

The fan is brand new and free spins. There are no switches or chains on the fan besides the forward reverse switch, which I swapped that. Used switch on the wall and remote control.

If the the plug’s connections are all under screws, see if there is a loose neutral under the wirenut inside the switch box.
                Turn the breaker off first
