    Duck Hunting Lake Amistad

Does any one on here duck hunt Lake Amistad? Can't seem to find much info on the duck hunting on the lake. Every time I am on the lake I see plenty of ducks. Just looking for more insight since I live only 70 miles away now. Not looking to steal any ones spot just some info. TIA

We deer hunt out there often, thought about it as we're big duck hunters too. Problem is with so much water they've got no reason to hang in the small areas you're allowed to hunt so it'll be a quick shoot. I've talked to two different people duck hunting out there, one guy at the boat ramp with no birds but was excited to tell me he got two the day before. Years when we have bad drought seem to be more birds but that's back when I ran into the hunters so doesn't seem too promising. It's hard to get excited when two birds is a good day.

It’s ok for locals but I wouldn’t drive there to specifically duck hunt.

We’ve fished/camped at Amistad this time of year and have always seen ducks in the backs of coves.

I have never duck hunted so take my info as second hand stuff. I have heard from folks that like to duck hunt that the best duck hunting is on the actual Rio Grande just down river of the dam. The hard part, is getting access to that part of the river. Additionally, it would require an extremely shallow running boat.

Also, I can tell you from first hand knowledge that there are tons of ducks on the Rio Grande River on the upriver side of Lake Amistad. This would be where the confluence of the Pecos and Rio Grande are. The problem with that part of the river is that is all considered part of National Park and not open to hunting.

I can vouch for river hunting below the lake just South of the city of Del Rio...
I had 8 miles of river frontage for over 30 years when I leased part of the Moody ranch... BEST duck lease I ever had, and I've had a bunch of 'em around the Katy/Brookshire prairies!! We'd deer hunt 'til around 9:30-10:00, run back to camp and grab a sausage/tortilla for breakfast, get the dog and shotguns... Had one decoy, a MoJo, but that was only about the last 3 seasons or so... All you had to do is get to the river... The ducks would fly up and down the river all day... You take 3 people, you get 3 limits, 10 people, 10 limits... beat anything I ever saw!! There was every imaginable kind of duck you could think of... First duck I ever killed with a bow was a wood duck drake and he's got a band on his foot... had him mounted... Shooting my recurve, I actually got my limit twice!

Like Perdeanal said, getting access to the river is the tough part. The Moody ranch has been sold 3 times since Mr Moody passed away. The current owner is trying to lease it, but he wants WAY too much for it, AND it's a constant battle with BP, DHS, USDA folks chasing illegals, drugs, and mesican cattle... Ain't no way in the world I'd every hunt that property again.

But it WAS THE BEST duck lease I ever had!! Only boat I know of that would work there is an airboat (BP uses them), but don't have a clue where you'd launch one...
