Building 22 cans -ATF question

Guy at work took apart his 22 can last night. I got to looking and it seemed very easy to actually build It just with the tools I allready have. Anyone filled out a form like doing a SBR for a can? I need something to do on rainy days.
Also if legal- Do you get the tube and put a serial number on It or does the ATF assign the number?

You do all the work engraving, etc. make sure to have the form 1 in hand before you start.

Friend of mine built them all the time for custom air rifles. ATF did find out but he showed they would only work for air rifles. Only reason they found him was he and partner were actually in the business of custom air rifles.
