    Volunteer/non profit opportunities

I love the outdoors and find that any time spent recreating in wild places enriches my life in profound ways. I'm sure most people here feel the same. I also have a sense that my personal enjoyment of wild lands is inherently selfish. Any suggestions for volunteer or donation opportunities. I know that some organizations are fraught with controversy so I want to make sure I'm doing the most good.

We (SCI Houston Chapter) are always looking for more volunteers and donations when it comes to our Youth Programs. We try to make our major yearly event exciting and an opportunity for all to participate in the drawings.

Landrover and the good folks at SCI do amazing things.

My son has hunted with Texas Youth Hunting Program for several years. It’s another high quality, well ran organization. They do a lot for kids and have opportunities for you to volunteer in many capacities.

        Kudos to you.

If you want to support veterans, look at Operation Second Chance---hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, ATV riding, etc in some beautiful country in Montana. A good friend of mine helps out with this and the money goes for the vets as all the staff are volunteers.

Wounded Warriors also offers outdoor related activities.

My best friend hosts a hunt (I help too) every year for families of game wardens killed in the line of duty. This year was the 7th or 8th year in a row. If interested, I could get you in touch with the organizers of the event. The next event will be in January 2021.

Also, I run a charitable foundation and have access to ways to vet organizations as to their IRS status and ratings. I could check up on any organization that you might be interested in learning more about.

Me too. I used to do some hunts and help with programs years ago. Even went to the huntmaster training weekend. Seems like work, life, and losing a special little friend that brought me into it caused me to push helping away. I'm retired now and have plenty of time so it's time to get back into it. I'm going to do some research but anybody needs help with a kid or disabled program please let me know.

Thanks again OP for bringing this subject up.

I will throw RMEF out there. Fantastic organization that supports development of habitat for elk, which in turn benefits all species.

BHA is also active in Texas. The local chapters do good work. The national level is sort of all over the place.

Full disclosure, I am a life member of both.

although I'm a lifetime member of BHA I think they need to get it together before I'll spend more time and money on them.

Project Healing Waters is really good and is fun to work with if you like to fish. DSC, SCI, Texas River Coalition, there are tons that have good programs really it is just finding one that you want to help with and talking to them to see what you can do. I have a friend that volunteers with Texas Bighorn Society knowing he'll likely never hunt one but loves contributing to the habitat and success of the herd

I will toss out Southern Outdoor Dreams. Great crew that takes Disabled Vets and Children with Disabilities on Outdoor adventures, hunts, etc. Great small charity organization based out of Angleton, TX.

You can find them on the web or FB.
