    Talon VS Power pole

I did a search and didn’t find much.
I’ve had a power pole for years and, have had nothing but trouble with it. They do have great customer service though.
Anyways have any of y’all had any experience with the Minn Kota Talon? I’m thinking real hard about taking the powerpole off and buying one. What’s y’all’s thoughts?

    Thanks,

I looked at them when I was rigging my boat and I’m sure they are great but with all the moving parts I was worried how they would hold up in the salt so I went with the power pole.

I have two 12ft talons on my boat. I love them and zero issues so far in the two years I have had them. I went with the talons over power poles because you anchor in deeper water and they deploy straight down. I believe the talon even has a 15ft option now.

I have had 4 sets of Talons on each of my boats over the past 3-4 years after being a diehard Powerpole fan. I made the switch due to JO trying to streamline their sponsorship packages. I was very skeptical at first due to how great the powerpoles worked since 2008, but quickly was impressed with the Talons. I cant speak to them in saltwater as I fish freshwater only, but have had them in brackish water fishing river systems and never had any issues. The last 3 sets of PP I ran the 10', which were about 4" too tall for an 8' garage door, so making the move to 12' talons, since they are a 3 stage deployment made it nice not having to lower them to get in the door. The talons will also hold a little more true to the designed holding depth due to them lowering straight down, instead of a a scissor type deployment. I was worried about the electric motors vs hydraulic in wet conditions but to this date I have had 0 electrical issues with my talons and do not have to worry with adding hydraulic pumps to an already full battery compartment. The only issue I have had to my talons is I snapped a cable last year during bad weather on Rayburn, which was 100% my fault as I got in a hurry and didnt raise one of the talons, ran with it down in shallow water for 1/2 mile. JO customer service was great though and I had a new talon before the next weekend.

            Power pole.

Go visit a store who does warranty work on both and count the dead bodies. It’s not even close.

My rig had a Talon on it when I bought it. It's never seen fresh water outside of flushing it. Has worked well, but it did bind up a few month ago after a prolonged rest. Good soaking of Corrosion X fixed her right up. If I'm wading a long ways from the boat I always put out a second anchor of some sort just to be sure. Never have had a PP, so can't really compare.

OP, what issues with the PP did you have?

Im only on year 3 with my pole but I love it. I do wish it would hold a bit deeper but I had clearance issues with the garage. In hindsight I could have gone 10' really. I have to deploy it halfway to get the garage anyway

Don't know much about talons but Power Poles customer service will likely keep me loyal and buying their equipment. Last year I busted both power pole knuckles when I got caught in a storm and twisted while anchored. I got on a live chat and sent them a few pics. Brand new parts headed my way by the end of the day. I had a pump issue this year and had the dealership look at it while I was getting maintenance done. Was told "Power Pole covered it". Oh and they work pretty good too

I like the Power Poles, have had them since they were first introduced, probably 8 sets, only a couple of issues and PP took care of it at no charge even though they were past warranty. The one thing I dislike about the Talon is how bulky and ugly they look on a boat, take a look around at a B A S S tourney, I bet they are 80-90 percent PP's on the boats. That being said I am sure Talon makes a great product, I just like all the features PP has to offer.

I'd go with Talons. The negative: they are heavier than the Power Poles. They bulkier than the PP. The positives: since they are telescopic, they are generally shorter (don't stick up as high); they also have the option to be layed/folded down on the back deck; no hydraulic system to worry about. I've heard it's a nightmare when a hose comes loose in that battery compartment and you have to clean hydraulic fluid. Also, Talons deploy straight down, where as PP extends out and down (this could be an issue when in a lot of cover.)

I have neither, but if I had a choice it would be the Talons, simply for the fold down brackets since I store my boat in my garage and they would not clear the door otherwise.

Have power poles now. Next time, it will be Talons.

                            No hydraulics = no headaches.
