    Broken antlers?

Anyone notice more broken antlers than usual on their bucks this season? At our place in Kinney county the ratio is about 1.5 does/ buck. Protein fed year round. Plenty of water throughout the ranch even with the drought. Something seems to be missing but we can’t figure it out.

Seems like the spring green up did good on growth but I think the summer drought made them brittle before they were done growing completely.
Noticed numerous deer this year broke off.

I tend to see the same deer with broken antlers every year. It’s like some are prone to it more than others.

I don’t know if they are more aggressive or something else. I have a middle aged 8pt that has broken his main beam in the exact same spot 3 years in a row.

Last year was the worst in 30 years on the same ranch. Just about every half way to decent buck was broke by half season. This year I saw just a couple

Mineral test. Record Rack did a test at a Ranch I helped at and they came back that we needed several types of minerals. They made special protein bags with added mineral we needed for the ranch and we notice more mass and horn weight then before. After 2-3 years the owner went to regular protein due the the exoctics and we did see a drop off on mass.

                      Broken antlers

We seen several, but then again the Hill country deer really aren't known for their mass, so we see broken ones every year it seems. We let a nice 8 walk due to being broke. Hopefully he will survive and be even bigger next year.

Some just fight more than others.
