    Pipe running across ranch

I bought 100 acres a couple of years ago and it had what appears an old well from years ago. Where the pad is there is no more equipment just the pipeline running across. Can I cut that up and use for fencing without any repercussions?

It would be a REALLY REALLY REALLY good idea to first confirm the pipes are idle and have been abandoned correctly. If there are any pockets of natural gas, NGLs, or oil, a simple ignition source could have VERY bad results.

I work for a large pipeline company and can help you determine who built/owns the lines and if they've been abandoned. PM me a lat/lon of your property and I'll take a look.

I'd go for it. What's the worst that could happen?

              Good advice above
              All pipes weren’t abandoned correctly

I’d definitely listen to Honker, make a one-call first.Alsi depending on how old the line is the coating could be asbestos. Is the line above ground and can you see it from one end to the other?Theres a big difference between and old flow line and a pipeline.

Appreciate all great advice. I'll pull longitude/latitude just to be safe. Lines are all above ground and across multiple ranches. Google earth appears they are all capped and no longer in use. (Rocksprings is town)

check with NPMS or PHMSA to see if it has been logged as an abandoned well. It should also have the last operator listed who can be contacted. I would not cut anything out and re-use it for fencing though, I would just fence around it as needed. Last thing you want is to cut on something that still has any residual hydrocarbon or pressure in it especially if you didn't install it. You may get lucky and find that its someone else's problem and have them come demo it for you.

If you start pulling up the pipe and cutting it up you may be releasing the pipeline company from any potential liability associated with contamination etc. Might want to think that through. Also, that old pipe may not be worth using for fence material if it's been in the ground for very long.

This was from another post on here a while ago.

https://gis.rrc.texas.gov/GISViewer/ zoom into the area and turn on wells to see abandoned wells.

Check with a cutting torch first !
                            Wanna make sure it’s safe.

relatively good condition 2 7/8" pipe is about $2.50 a foot... cut into length. with a near 0% chance you'll blow up unloading them off a trailer
