    Public Turkey Hunting

Not much came up on my search, but has anyone been able to successfully hunt turkeys on public land here in Texas?

    Once in East Tx.
Best bet would be look at out of state.

I second this. I go every year up to Southern Indiana and hunt there, Kentucky, and Missouri...all public land.

Its cheaper to drive or fly up north, buy out of state tags, and hunt for a week than it is to pay for some of the stupid prices people charge a Rio here.

I’ve never seen or heard one on public land in Texas. Out of state seems to be the best options. I’m looking at Oklahoma And maybe Kansas.

Are there no birds or not many hunters?

We have limited WMAs that allow turkey hunting. Heck, I see them at Granger, near Austin, all the time, but there is no season.

And I can tell you in Louisiana. There is no fall season, so while hunting deer, they show up to your feeder with no less than about 30. Come spring you can't find hide nor hair (feather) of one.

Now as for out of state. The buddy I hunted with in Louisiana moved to TN and his first season he got two.

If you can kill a public land Tom in Texas (outside of TPWD draw), you're a hell of a hunter. I've personally never bothered trying, but then again, I have plenty of private land access with birds. I do enjoy the out of state public hunting once I've filled my Texas tags (which usually occurs by the end of opening weekend of the north zone). With this mild winter we've had, I think the Toms are going to be getting after it pretty early this spring.

I have called in and killed a few on the public land near me. Called in a few fellow hunters as well.

It's not the easiest thing in the world, but not the hardest either.

I know of a multiple places that are listed as public hunting land, that have turkeys, but none of those places allow turkey hunting. The only place I can think of that might allow turkey hunting, would be one of the national forests, Such as Sam Houston or Davy Crockett.

It is amazing to me where you see them when it is not turkey season

Hunt roughly 10 miles from Davy Crockett NF, highly doubtful there are many turkeys in the area.

LBJ grasslands. Turkeys everywhere around Decatur. I went two years ago and got lucky enough for a 40 degree temp drop and 30mph winds when I arrived, so no luck for me. Plan on going back this year
