    DIY gate for FEED PEN

Setting up a new protein feeder and pen in couple weeks. Looking for ideas you guys have used for making a gate on feed pen. Would like to be able to drive truck up to feeder.

Pen will be constructed of 12- 16ft cattle panels and T-Post.

Originally though of framing a gate with treated deck boards. Just a basic rectangle, and attaching cattle panel to deckboards and use U bolts as a hinge around 1 of the T-post. Have hinge side on corner and chain gate closed.

Looking for ideas, what you got?

I have built a lot of feeder pens and I’ve seen a lot of feeder pens and none of them were fancy the gates are all just wired at the top and bottom to the T post where it closes easy open and easy close that’s just my two cents worth.

Many of our pen gates are just another 16' panel...Off the top of my head, I think 12 of the 14 are. Cheap, easy and serviceable. Don't overthink it.

I have seen folks cut them down to 12' instead of 16' to add rigidity but 16' works fine for us.

I don’t think I have any pics but hopefully this makes sense. I slightly modify the way I build the pen after it is built and make a removable panel. Our pens are circles so normally we wire the panels together at each end. After the pen is completely built we will go back and add the gate to it. We unwire 1 panel, completely remove it and wire the 2 remaining ends to the t-post they were at already. That leaves us dealing with the middle t-post to create the full opening. We take a larger corner galvanized fence posts and cut a 16” section of it so we can concrete that in the ground where the middle t-post used to be. Knock the blade off the middle t-post, now you have a removable middle t-post. We use yellow romex to attach the removable panel to all 3 t-posts so it is easy to unwire each time we need to use the gate.

Started doing this method in 2006 I think and never saw a reason to change.

I just use a couple hose clamps on one end of a 16' panel and wire the other.Undo the wire and swing open.

Just unwire one of the panels and you've got a gate

This sounds like a good idea. I'm aware i don't need to be fancy and build a gate. Was just worried about the strength/rigidness of the panel without having a t-post in the middle.

It will be fine..... One of mine is 10 years old and it has goats and cows walk around it all the time with no issues. It is a cattle panel that I cut the top row off of so its a little taller than a hog panel. Off the top of my head, TBher Humper has had a 16' hog panel gate that is 34" tall for at least 8 years on our place as well.

I tie it in well at 2-3 spots on one end and then have a utility hook on the other end to keep it secure.

i use carabiners to snap a panel in instead of wiring it to the t-post never had a cow get in and only a couple pigs that couldn't get out once they got in.

I like that idea. Might have to make that upgrade to mine.

Here is one I did recently that worked well. I took two panels and bent one around the other for separation (about 3ft at the largest gap) since there is no barbed wire across the top it makes it harder for a cow or deer to jump across two panels. There is a t-post wired on the top of the panel on the other side in case cows try to push the panel over it digs into the ground and provides support. You can detach the whole thing with bailing wire and pull it open in a few seconds.

                          DIY gate for FEED PEN

This is what I did on my new feed pen. I got tired of pulling panels back.
