I wear a cap almost all the time, but I don't have this issue. If I'm going to church or out to eat, I simply don't wear a hat- problem solved.

But if you do wear a hat out on such occasions, I could care less if you choose to wear it or not at the table or inside. Not my place to judge. And FTR- I have been out and about with some OLD SCHOOL ranchers in my time and almost all of them wore their hat at the dinner table. I would love to see some of you try and tell them to take it off, talking about 'manners'...

So just for giggles and grins answer this.
What is the point of wearing your cover, lid, cap or hat inside?
To me it's kind of like wearing your sunglasses inside or at night. Not sure what the point is.

Nowhere safe to put it. So I wore it. Felt strange but I wasn’t giving a $600 felt hat to the waitress to set somewhere. World didn’t end and I didn’t seem to offend anyone. And mostly the wife don’t mind. That was enough “ok” for me.

Using that logic, why wear shoes once your inside on carpet in a building? Or why wear nicer attire to an event instead of old work overalls? ...for me it's just part of dressing up nicer for a personal event. When at a PD related gathering, we are asked to wear our black felt hats when we are in class A's. I don't equate it to sunglasses while inside... that would just be dumb lol.

Dress uniform requirements is a whole different question.
But for the average person in an average situation the had adds no purpose inside.
                    Except maybe to ego.

If you're too ugly or you're head is too messed up to be without it, maybe you should stay home.

How does removing the hat constitute manners?

Just because of the way it’s always been or if there a reason that it’s considered good manners to remove your hat?

Because that’s what was/is considered manners by society-at-large where I’m from.

I’m not sure I fully understand your question. Would you pose the same question about eating with your mouth closed or holding the door for a lady?

If you would answer yes to either of those then I think your understanding of “manners” may differ from the majority of Texas.

I just don't understand the hat thing.

Chewing with your mouth closed is preferred because it's just gross to show people your food while eating it.

Holding the door open for a man or woman is doing them a service in a sense, so that also isn't under question here.

The hat thing doesn't seem to benefit anyone in any way from my perspective, so I was asking to see if there is something I'm missing there

My understanding of "manners" is just fine, just have questions about why things are the way they are. Especially when they make no logical sense to me.
