Every Man Needs a Bird Dog

I’ve had bird dogs from the time I was born... under the tutelage of my father I owned five or six, hunted them infrequently but always trained and ran the dogs on a regular basis with homegrown quail... I never really valued the experience, discipline or time it took to develop the bond all the old guys in Grays Sporting Journal spoke of. Well Two years ago I got my first bird dog on my own dollar and in short she’s been a revelation. The discipline and loyalty from her has taught me so much. Her willingness to learn and adapt is second to none.... in short it’s been a reminder to have a purpose and seek it without excuse. Y’all go get ya one Click image for larger version

Beautiful dog. Grew up with a couple back home in MS (pointer and a setter) and by the time I got big enough to shoot over them the birds were gone from the area. So we did homegrown birds too and my dad and his buddies would set them out for me. Had a blast and didn’t know any different than a single bird flush. Ha I’ve been on several good bird hunts in west TX since then and it is one of my favorites. I got into training labs around high school and college and never made my way back to bird dogs. Would love to do it one day when my kids are gone and I have more time to spend with a bird dog.

You know the grind then man! Having that quail pen at the house was a chore. Daggum fire ants got us on the natural born quail
