This year was quite a bit different than previous years. To start with, I was able to get the corn going and cameras out earlier than my normal Sept.
Pulled camera cards sometime around late Sept.
Great news, lots of good young bucks, a few OLD culls and even a few good mature bucks.
The wait was on. It's too hot, and surf fishing is too good, along with Sharkathon. I wasn't going to get a chance till mid November. We had our target buck picked out (for my boy), a mature 11 pt, very nice deer. It is better than any I had shot before.
He was a frequent visitor at one, and only one stand. Well, one of our (my boy and I)first hunts, we have a few deer milling around and out at two hundred and fifty yards, I spot the big boy working his way in. (My yardage is spot on, I put markers out so everyone would know the distance down the senderos)
He hangs up at 150, calm, but just snacking out there. I wanted him in within 115 for my boy. Don't want to risk it on this deer. He finally comes in right at 100 yards, I'm thinking PERFECT! But he stays feeding head to us. Feeder goes off, he just looks at it. The he turns to walk to it.
Perfect, he's giving a perfect broadside shot. We get the gun out the window.
He looks past the feeder, spins and trots off in the brush. Daggum stupid Javalinas! Come running to the feeder like a fat kid to the dessert table.
That's the last my boy would see him. He'd show up on camera a few times here and there, but no pattern I could figure out.
I had two other times later where I had a shot, I was texting momma to ask him if he still wanted to go for him, or me shoot him. Had to ask, but, of course, "NO DAD, I want to get him".
Long story short, he never would show up for my boy again. I saw him a few days ago, the morning before my boy got out there (school does really get in the way sometimes, lol).
We hunted hard for him the last few days of the season. But he stayed hidden.
The last hunt, he wanted to sit with my sister. Glad he did, I only saw a regular visiting young, but nice, buck. He was able to put about a perfect shot on a doe. He was thrilled with ending his season like that.
I was also able to put my two nephews on their first deer ever, both got some nice bucks they are thrilled with.
And my sister got a really cool cull buck that I'm kinda jealous of, lol.
This year my boy really has been able to watch and learn even more about looking at deer and figuring out young/middle/mature on them. He'll take a quick look and tell me what he thinks.
Looking forwards to next year already.
