From my research that is iron. Answer is yes, but need to upsize your softener by a lot. Haven't taken my info too far, we don't have that.

Got the test kit in the mail. Getting 7 grains per gallon. Seems a bit low but gives me a starting point. Thinking 48k grain softener

I got a fleck 20 years ago. installed it my self. Still works just fine. I do use the potasium chloride in lieu of sodium.

You might want to check into the Broadhead H2O water conditioner for residential use. It's some pretty cool technology.

Here’s mine, had it installed a few years ago also had about a 50 gallon bin for salt, not one problem.

Get a fleck. Mine has been going for 13 years and no issues. I replaced the resin this year and works just like it did the day I put it in.

I was at 7 grains per gallon initially, down to 3 as soon as I turned the softener on. Checked last night, and I'm basically zero by the test strips I've been using. Can feel the difference for sure. Very pleased.

What brand did you end up going with?

                      Bisch

Aquasure Harmony 48k grain from home depot. Price was the same as the Fleck but got better reviews with regard to customer service. Biggest issue seemed to be parts breaking initially with a difficulty getting help based on reviews from Amazon. I felt more comfortable having some recourse through Home Depot.

Might be a dumb question but, do they all require a drain line?

Yes needs 2 drain lines one for brine wash and one for overflow
I would double check your diy guys if you are in city limits bc just using regular pvc might not be code. It needs to have the cpvc or copper...or pex in case the hot were to back up etc.
I just went thru this and didnt want it to be redone if the house was inspected and flagged
