Sand it first, stain it, burnish it. Then go to Home Depot Lowe’s get Varathane, urathane. Gloss or semi gloss. If your using treated wood make sure the moisture is out of the wood. Put a couple three coats on it. Sand between coat with 300 grit or OO steel wool
