Dena, we talked at the expo. and like I had told you......... I will beg, borrow or steal to go if drawn

To answer the question of how it could be cheaper to hunt there than in the US. To my knowledge right now you can get your plane ticket for around $1500, heads and hides dipped and shipped for around $800-1000 (guessing here), tips for guide, trackers, etc. for the hunt approx. $500. So with these prices in mind you can go to Africa and hunt the package you win for $3k

Now I have not been myself (YET) but from those I have talked with that have, this is a reasonable guess at total cost.

Maybe they could not afford it. You can give all the animals you want for free and your still going to need 4-5K for transportation, dipping, shipping, and taxidermy fees. YES, it is half of what it would have cost, but not everyone can just splurge 5K at the drop of a hat, (just because they won). Like Chew said, no need to make them feel bad by making a big deal out of it. I am sure they know what they have just turned down and are sick to their stomachs about it. Someone will be getting a good deal for sure, I would have to turn it down as well if I was to win, just not the right time in my life to be leaving for a week to go hunting.

Someone paint an "L" on my forehead Yes, I really do know what I turned down as I went to SA in '07.

It killed me to turn if down but when I looked at how much business I have to take care of this summer, it will be cheaper for me to pay full price for a trip next year or 2011 than the free trip this year.

I really hope the next person drawn will be able to go. It will be a great trip and I feel sorry for Dena having to spend so much time trying to give away such a great trip.

There must be some rich folks on here. There is no way I could come up with $3,000 to go over there. Its great that the LSBA gives away these prizes but I think the Africa drawing is a little over the top. Most people cannot afford to go to Africa on short notice without ample time to save money. It would take me a few years to put away that amount of cash. Now maybe a hog hunt or a whitetail hunt would be more realistic for a drawing. Let the African hunts only be used for auctions so only the people who have the means to go will bid on it. Just my very honest opinion.

I would have turned it down as well. Although it is a great prize I just doubt I would have fun over there

with that math I still don't see how it is cheaper than staying here and hunting? Oh well, good luck to the winner

I am just giving you a hard time, but I do want everyone to know how grateful I am-I just can't make it work!
Hey Bonnie! I only know of one person that got drawn and contacted me! Great guy and I assumed he was going from our conversation. I had no idea that many people were drawn and not going. I can relate to the hunting schedule you and Mike already have.....actually jealous of it!!!

Most of the points being made NOT to go on the trip are the same ones you had last year. It ain't that hard or that expensive once you take time to learn all that is involved! Sorry if I stepped on toes but I gotta be honest, "get after it"........a great time to be had for sure! Oh, when talking about cost it is cheaper than most "good" leases and definitely less expensive than some of the high end hunts right here in Texas.

I for one can go at the drop of the dime. However other things come into play.

One being that I dont like to go on hunting adventures by myself, I like to share hunting adventures with my friends. Most of my friends can't go on hunts like this at moments notice.

Maybe, the people that were drawn can afford to go but see money being spent elsewhere as a better choice. Or maybe staying with the family is prefered. I'm sure these folks didn't join LSBA to win this hunt rather joined it to help a great org. and just happend to get picked.
Why is it assumed that these folks that won live under a bridge in a box because they are flat broke?
I wouldn't go to Africa to hunt period, nothing there interests me and I would gladly pass it on to someone else rather than let it go to waste.
