If you are planning on fishing for crawfish, it may be a little more difficult than you might think. First, the wild crawfish may or may not be in season then. It varies from year to year, but farm raised crawfish are always a backup for the festival in short years. Second, it may be hard to find an acceptable fishing spot in the Atchafalaya Basin. Most of the land in the basin is private and commercial fishermen have "their spots" staked out and don't take kindly to "visitors" fishing it. Besides, these spots require deep water traps (known as pillow traps). If the crawfish are really running well and the water levels are right, then it might be possible to fish next to the public levees with lift nets (shallow water rigs). However, this can often be crowded with locals. So just be aware of these issues when you go. There are a few farms in the region that will allow you to crawfish for a fee -- either with lift nets or by running commercial crawfish traps. You would want to do some research ahead of time if interested in that.

Or Henderson swamp is pretty close
Or Butte La Rose on the Atchafalaya river
The main area of "the Basin" (main Atchafalaya swamp) is east of Breaux Bridge between Butte La Rose and Grosse Tete
Lots of access to "the Basin" at many place around the area.

Self contained camping is available in the back lot right at the festival grounds. Tents up to big RV's and everything in between
If you want power bring a genset
We will be there in our pickup camper.
The small town style parade Sunday morning is a hoot
I have a cousin that lives off the Bayou Teche in St. Martinsville. When is the Breaux Bridge festival?

Lol I'd say most folks outside of the Golden Triangle don't....Texas is a big state and most of the people on this board probably didn't grow up with LA in their backyard like we did.

It's still there, it's just not Mulate's anymore. Called something else, but can't remember... Same deal... great food, live Cajun band/dancing in the evenings... Been a year or more since I was there... Hopefully nothing's changed... other than the name...

I also recommend Bon Temp's... Our very own Cajun Blake turned me onto that place several years ago, and it's been a regular stop for me since then... Don's in Downtown Lafayette is still dang good too, especially if you like stuffed flounder and their gumbo is hard to beat...

Riverside is still there in Lafayette too, and still OK, but not what it used to be... good atmosphere tho.

Prejeans would be at the very bottom of my list!

Lake Martin around that time of year has really good Crappie fishing. Or as we like to call em, Sacalait. Fish the duck blinds with blue/white tube jigs or for bass, weedless brush hog flipping to the bank or broken lillies. It was one of my go to spots when i did not feel like roaming the miles and miles of the Atchafalaya basin.

There is a little boardwalk on the east side the lake where there is a protected Crane sanctuary. When the hatchlings are molting and attempting a first flight there are hundreds of gators waiting to snatch them up. Its a huge lake for Photography and there is also a swamp tour. Not sure if he still operates there, but Champ's swamp tours operated out from the only boat launch on the lake.
