It's pretty much been said but either trade in and move on or DOD/AFM delete with cam. I've gone either direction with previous GMs so i guess it boils down to how much you like the rest of the vehicle.

In my case i'm going to drive my current sierra into the ground so if it happens i'll go the cam/delete route. My wife's yukon is awesome but we went 2wd this time and somewhat regret that so I'll just trade hers in if it happens.

Also, one final note... If you do the cam/tune/Delete it makes driving it more fun. Whole different experience.

I had a 07 Avalanche that I had to replace all the lifters on. Gave me another 30k miles after that and started to do the same thing. You need to buy the program that cuts the AFM out and it will be fine, after you get them replaced of course.

Won't buy the Chevy 5.3 anymore, known problem with them if they have the AFM and Chevy won't do **** about it.

I believe if the cam is good you can just replace the AFM/DOD lifters with normal lifters and turn the AFM/DOD off in the ECM and go down the road. That's a much cheaper alternative.

Had a 2015 Chevy with a 5.3. Traded it in with 19K mi. At about 18K I had the left side go bad. Lifters and valves if I remember correctly. Didn’t trust it after that and got rid of it.

Moved to a 17 Chevy with the 6.2. Traded it in with 28K mi. At about 27 I started getting a knock. Same issues as the 15.

          Both were tuned without AFM.

Think I’m done with GM for a while.

Idk how deep they will go but whatever the mechanic was looking at yesterday showed a problem on #7.
Not true. When we traded in the Yukon that I spoke of earlier, they didn't so much as open the doors.

Just wanted to give an update. Called around quite a bit today and was given some more information from a very reputable shop in Denton. Basically I was told that If the knocking is intermittent (in the early stages) and you get the lifter unstuck (what causes the knocking noise) and delete the DOD then most of the time the issues won’t surface and goes away. Early this afternoon I cranked it up, knocking was not present so I took it to a guy a know with a HP tuner and we deleted the DOD. He scanned it before hand and everything appeared fine on his diagnostics so hopefully without allowing it to drop down to 4 cylinders my problems are over. If not it’s money I’d have spent following lifter and cam replacements, so I guess we will wait and see how things go from here.

Not trying to kick a man when he’s down, but it’s still going to fail.

Will it still pass an emissions inspection?

GM doesn't do AFM anymore. Totally different set up in the new 5.3's.

Welcome to the unwilling GM R&D participation group. Unfortunately you can substitute Ram or Ford or Toyota for GM in this statement and be just as true.

The new GM engines DFM does not cut off the same cylinders each time in goes to V4. The new program selects various combinations so as to not cause the same stresses on the same 4 cylinders all the time. This new program is what won the GM 6.2l engine the Wards Engine of the year award for 2019. Hopefully it has taken care of the lifter issues. https://news.pickuptrucks.com/2018/0...e-changer.html

Yea that seems to be the next step in this process.

The same thing happened to my wife’s Yukon. 13’ 6.2. Ran just fine until the knock. Luckily we got it to shut up long enough ror me to haul it around the corner from a dealership. Traded for a 19’ Traverse.

What year did gm change to the random cylinder shutdown? My wife has a 17 Tahoe with the 5.3 afm. She has around 60,000 miles on it.

Any of the 5.3's with the 8 speed have DFM (I think thats the new acronym) instead of AFM. I think 2019.
