Don’t know to call this an artifact or antique but I found this while looking for arrowheads at our deer lease in Fredericksburg. Found a few heads that were started but never finished along with this gem. Anyone have any sort of info on it? It reads S.U.M.C.H. 32-40 on it. Less than half the length of the brass is left.

The s and h is separate from umc, umc is union metallic cartridge or maybe company, i can't remember for sure. Looks like a balloon head case. Edit to add: with a little google foo itooks like the s and h mean solid head, so there goes my balloon head theory. Also apparently Winchester and Remington made 32-40s, but they were not the same. That's all i got, cool findLast edited by RJH1; 01-03-2020, 09:13 PM.

S H stands for "solid head", that case was made before 1900. Solid Head is a stronger version of balloon head cartridges. 32-40 was a popular cartridge for Schuetzen target rifles. Back in the late 1800's Schuetzen Verein were very popular in the Boerne, New Braunfels, Fredricksburg areas. I believe there is one still around at the Dietz Range. You can go to ASSRA web site and find out more.
Here is my 32-40 and 25-35 lever guns. Both are Winchesters, there was a John Wayne Commemorative available as well.
