New to Archery and grasping the idea of Bow Hunting

I recently encountered the world of Archery. Not by choice and not by chance.

At first... It was a simple repetitive thud... at first. (I was working in my back yard) After about 30 minutes, that repetitive thud now become a rhythmic hammer. I half wanted to know what it was and half wanted to stop with the honey do list. So I peaked over the fence.

My neighbor and hunting partner was practicing. (Draw... hold... thwack) He had always bragged about his bow hunts, (Draw... hold... thwack) the fact that he gets an early jump on all us shooters. (Draw... hold... thwack) My argument has always been (Draw... hold... thwack.) that at least I can pluck then from 200 out! Draw... hold... thwack. Draw... hold... thwack. Draw... hold... thwack. It was mesmerizing and when he asked if I wanted to try. Well I did. I drank the Kool Aid.

I left my domain and went into the wonderful world of archery. I had never experienced the pleasure of the pull and release. I was able to hit the target at about 15 yards and that was enough. I want my own set up?

He told me to come here. So... Here I be.

    What next?

Went to several Pawns around here but not sure what I am looking for. I want a decent set up. Not a through away and something that I can grow into. Heck I'm not even too sure what all I should get. Went to one of those Archery stores in Austin and he was talking between $1000-$1200!!! Yikes. Someone should tell him the economy is in the tank.

first thing you need to find out is what is your draw length(local bow shop can tell you).

next figure out what you want to spend. you can find a top end used bow at some great prices.

suggestion stay away from the box stores and spend your time and money at a pro shop. you will get alot better advise

Get to a pro shop pronto, most still have 08 bows at heavily discounted prices.

              Who's your neighbor?

I'll second the advice to go to a pro shop. Double G in Georgetown is pretty close to Leander, and Paul usually has some used bows for sale. Tell him what you want to spend and he will work with you. Prices are only a little higher than a box store, and the difference is more than worth it. You get someone who actually knows what they are talking about.

It's probably not the best idea for you to drop $1200 on a new rig if you aren't sure bowhunting is for you. You can get a used rig for around half that.

First of all, welcome to the fire....

Second, welcome to your new addiction!!

Third, get to a pro shop, and have them help you get the proper set up(draw weight, length, etc.) then shoot every bow you can get your hands on!!!! The right bow will find you. When you get ahold of it and shoot it you will KNOW it's the one.

Dren, Futch, Jon... thanks for the advise! Not sure what my next door neighbors handle is but he said this was a great site for learning, talking, and bragging about the sport. I'll tell him I started a thread.

I think that I will head up to Georgetown wendsday of this week and see what I can see.

I found out that my Draw is 30 and I could pull and hold 65 fairly well while at the shop in Austin. With some practice it would become easy I'm sure. The draw I mean.

I did go to Cabelas in Buda, some young guys back there in the Archery Department. They did not seem real interested in helping me fact find. But they did enjoy taking turns with a long bow in the shooting range. I am not all together too sure they were prepared for the questions they were asked.

Yeah addictions are tough to skimp on. And there is a lot less cost at the range, aka the backyard than with shooting. What should I get to get by and thanks for the advise.
