I spent the weekend chasing deer in Frio County at the CDLC with some of my greatest friends. Others were enjoying busy hunts while I struggled to see game. I had one and two deer sightings during some hunts while others got to watch a lot of bucks chasing does all weekend. I think 5 bucks were shot over the course of the weekend.
While I seemed to be struggling to get together with a shooter all weekend, my luck changed Sunday night. While sitting in an old-school, Brush Country, Double Bull T5 ICE blind, a buck showed up that suited the management plan. Trey Powers (Tex Cattleman) had seen this buck that morning at a different stand, but it was after he had dropped a crapper, (buck not the other thing you're thinking about). Being unable to shoot two deer in a hunt, he kicked himself at missing the opportunity at this one. That evening, the one-eyed 8 pointer and I crossed paths. The buck ended a 7 year drought on bucks for me at the lease. I killed a 156 in 2012 and spent most of the next few years hunting with my kids, focusing on their endeavors. I'm thrilled to have had the opportunity at this buck. He's one of my all-time favorites.
