Learn me on golf cart batteries...

We have a 48V EZGo at the lease that needs batteries. It has 4- 12V Trojans in it now. It is stored in a conex and gets used once or twice a month. We have power in the conex. Is their a better/cheaper option than Trojans? Have heard that storing cart in hot area will kill the batteries so we shouldn’t buy good batteries.

Not using the batteries will kill them as well. No clue as to the answer for you but those batteries need to be used and recharged.

I think Trojan has some really good " how to maintain" videos on their site.
        Might be worth look

When you are not using the cart, usually their is a run/maintenance toggle switch under the seat on the controller. Switch it to maintenance and that turns off your controller and stops the power draw on the batteries. This will make your batteries last longer and not discharge them when not in use.
As far as batteries, don't go cheap, stay with Trojan, theft are the best.

I have a Polaris Ranger EV that has 8 - 12 volt batteries in it. I just finished year 5 on the original set. Key is keeping them full, but not overfilled, with water and not over charging. I top mine off with distilled water a couple of times a year. I changed the charging algorithm on the built in charger to a "less hot" number but do leave it plugged in all the time if we are not riding it. I open the hood and remove the seat when charging too to allow the sulfuric acid gases released an easier escape path.

When the time comes for me to get new batteries I will look into AGM batteries. These require no watering and gas off much less. Search for a post by Chance Love on her where he mentions the batteries he put in his EV before selling it recently.

If you cannot keep the charger plugged in while in the CONEX then I would buy the cheqpoest option you can find because they likely won't last too many years. Check Sam's club if you are a member. Also lots of great information on www.buggiesgonewild.com

Does your charger have a maintainer built into it? If not you need to buy one. The batteries will sulfate when not being used and/or charged/desulfated and that will kill them quicker.

I don’t think the heat has as much to do with them going bad as lack of use and letting them run dry.

I kept the cart I have in a container for three years and it has been in my shop for the last year, Trojans are still going strong. Use, charge, keep the correct water level, and mind the connections. The water level for golf carts is just above the plates, too much and it boils out. Learned that the hard way !
