Anywhere to get oxy-acetylene bottles cheap.

I’m wanting to build a drill stem pipe fence and need a cutting torch setup. I can get a Victor 250 torch, regulator & hose set for $200 online or a similar Harris setup at Airgas in Alvin. The issue is the cost for the bottles. Central welding wants a $300 cash deposit and Airgas wants to charge $98 per bottle per year for rental.

There has to be a less expensive way to go. Craigslist is full of scammers and I’m not interested in cleaning the garbage out of someone’s garage to get a pair of bottles that’s out of inspection.

    Any ideas out there?

You’re topped out. Or Richie Brothers Auctions has some.

If you buy used, make sure they are “owner bottles”. Look around the collar and make sure there is no name stamped in it, you’ll likely never get it filled that way.

For what you want to do, the B bottles probably won’t work. You can try Tractor Supply, but $300 is about the going rate on Craigslist. I got full clean neck 244cf O2 and 130cf acetylene cylinders for $300 after a LOT of looking.

I got my argon and C25 bottles from this guy. He is generally the cheapest around for new test, owner, full bottles. His current ad indicates he has oxygen and acetylene.

Airgas will sell you owner bottles of the big ones and is honestly the best way to go. Just tell them you want them to order you a size 4 ac and 2 size 200 ox. But that said it will take probably 4-8 weeks to get them in and once they are in will take you a good 2-4 weeks to get your ac bottle filled and returned. Ox should be a quick flip but ac will take a while.

That said we use a propane 20 and 2 OX 200 size cylinders for our use around the ranch with no issues. Propane will do everything you need to do just fine. Be cheaper to run and is easier to get filled when it is empty. Then you just have to wait a day or 2 for ox when you run them empty. Just make sure to get propane tips for your torch. This was always my suggestion to people when I was running a plant for Airgas.

I used my chop saw to build my pipe fence. Check on YouTube for coping pipe with a chop saw. Works well.

I’ve always liked the look of pipe fences when the railing was pinched or flattened on the ends and welded alongside the pipe post.

I have two bottles that were chained to a tree on my property, when I bought the place. Not sure what’s in them or if they are any good but you can have them!

Best place and prices I've found in the Ft. Worth area for gases or oxy, and hard equipment, is Ft. Worth Welder's Supply. They are also open to 1PM on Saturdays.

It is easier just to rent the oxygen bottle and run propane for the gas. Have to be very careful regarding bottles from sale from individuals because I have bought some from guys and take them in to get filled and they won’t fill them or they have even taken the bottles from me because they were not customer owned.

I’ve bought bottles off of eBay before. New owner bottles. I don’t remember the price.

If you are welding you have power. So but a cheap plasma cutter from Harbor Freight get the extended warranty and a air compressor then you are set.
