    Hall and Childress county help.

Hello everyone. I need a little help or advice. So I'm hunting in mexico at the current time, I've been down there the last couple years. All the recent activity down there has got me a lot nervous. So i might have the opportunity to lease a place northwest of Childrees about 15 miles and or 5 miles south southwest of Esteline. Give you a little info about the place. It is 4 sections and I'm going to put 4-5 men on it. About 1/3 of it is crp and wheat fields. The rest is canyon and rolling hills. I'm not to concerned about the mule deer it has plenty, ranch hand and owner says you can see 100 mule deer on the wheat. I've asked about the white tail and they say they are there. I'm more of a white tail hunter and would like to know if anyone has hunted this part of Hall county. Would like to know about white tail deer numbers and quality. I've always wanted to hunt north Texas and this seems like a good place. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You!

I hunt in Hall county. Off of Hwy 86. South of Estelline. They are right. Tons of mule deer in that area. With the mule deer antler restrictions in place we are starting to see some nice deer. There are some nice whitetail in the area but it’s not known for big bucks. They are big bodied but it can be a rough sit at times. I’ve been out there for 8 seasons and I do see whitetail about every time I sit. Just kinda rare to see a mature shooter. Atleast in my area. That area has been in a rough drought for years. Any water on the place ?

Yes there is water. It has a creek on it that most of the time is running. It is not at the time and I would think in the summer it is not running much. There are a few water trough on the place. There is cattle about 100 head.

I enjoy out there. Also never had any problems with our stuff on the lease. There are some big deer up there just not the numbers you would see in central Texas. We don’t see any turkey but the dove and quail have been good the last three seasons. We aren’t over run with hogs but there are some big ones on our place. If you need to run into town you’ve got your choice of Memphis or Childress. Or you can head south to Turkey. Not much there but a Allsups. Wind blows real hard up there can be a *** whipping sometimes. Hope this helps. If you do decide to get on give me shout. It’s always nice to have help close by.

There are good genetics in the panhandle. You will not see great quantity of WT. But I would rather have quality. Have ton of pigs. Would keep hunter numbers as low as wallet will allow.

I hunted the prairie dog fork red river, good mule deer and white tail deer
Dropped off it because it was a 9-10 hour drive one way
Then a huge rain washed out the road down the canyon and hunting it was impossible
Except for a small part up in crp and about 400 acres of brush ( has good potential)

My experience has been identical to Guerrero88s. Mule deer are a lot more concentrated, and the restrictions are paying off quickly. White tail numbers are low, but occasionally you’ll see something decent. Hogs are there, just not in abundance. Coyotes make it worth it for me.

Coyotes are crazy up there. I’ve started to pick up on yote hunting. Man it’s a blast. I plan on doing much more this season.

Might be one of the reasons deer numbers a low, Yotes are fawn killers.

Which way out of Tell? I’m about 5 miles south west of Tell.
