We are going to put out a couple protein feeders next month and plan to keep them filled through the summer. For those that use timed protein feeders,(like The Hammer) what’s your feed schedule? Does having them open only during daylight hours help with the coon problem? I rarely see pics of coons at our corn feeders during the daytime. If you had it open for a while after sunup and then open for a while before it gets dark, are the deer likely to get on that schedule and eat it all before the coons come out? What is your experience?

I have mine open from about 30 minutes before sunup for a couple of hours, and then from an hour before sunset until an hour after sunset. I have BossBuck feeders with Hammer timers and CoonHoods. The coons sometimes try to get into them, but they just can't. Mostly the coon have just given up, but i have a couple that are hard headed. Without the CoonHoods i worried that the coon would eventually tear down the feed heads doing chin ups on them. I really like the setup.
I will say this, i'm working w/ a limited budget. I'm using the protein as an attractant and a supplement. They won't get the full benefit of free choice, but they'll get more than they would have otherwise. I'm not feeding coons, and i'm not wasting feed on the ground. It's the best i've been able to figure out.Last edited by mikemorvan; 12-22-2019, 06:29 PM.
