    Metal worker guys or handymen

I need to connect 2 pieces of flat metal (one on top of the other) without harming or defacing the top piece.

I have a tailgate bench that son has made. I am trying to attach the tail gate to the bench without screwing thru the tailgate. The bench wasn't built to use hardware of the tailgate for the attachment points.

Any ideas, at this point I am out of normal ideas and have moved to magnets and 2 sided tape. Would like any better ideas you have.

You could use jb weld between the pieces of metal

Pics would be better. Can you attach brackets on the bottom side of tailgate to attach it to the bench?

Assuming you’re only worried about not wanting fasteners through the visible face of the tailgate, and not avoiding drilling it to use it on a truck later, I’d just use rivets.

Clamp it in place, drill through the bench and through the back side of the tailgate, then use a manual rivet gun to fasten it. If the bench is made of box tubing rather than flat steel and a rivet won’t reach, you can put a rivnut in the tailgate and use a bolt through the bench.

Forget the tailgate, mount the vise on 2" square tubing use it in the receiver hitch or mount a piece of 2.5" square tube in the truck bed, slide the vise piece into that to use.
