That was a great read. No telling how many times a mature buck works in really slow only to hear a noise or catch a tiny whiff of scent and then just melt away.
I guided a fellow here in east tx a few years ago that is a great bow hunter and has killed a bunch of south tx giants. I put him in a stand in a big thicket bordering a grown up weed field after a 8 year old 9 pt. It was a cold day and this fellow brought a thermal monocular. He would scan around and find deer out in the brush totally invisible otherwise. The old 9 pt came in to about 35 yrs at about 4pm. He stood motionless and totally invisible except for the thermal for well over 30 minutes. Then he committed and walked straight in before taking an arrow through the heart. Amazed me how long he stood and watched before coming in.

It really make me wonder. I didn’t realize they would approach that quietly and slow. The single thing that gave him away eventually was the body language and behavior of that smaller buck. Eye opening experience.
