    English Springer Spaniel

Anybody have one of these breeds? What could I expect out of it? Would most likely be a family pet with lots of playing with my youngster.

Also, anyone know of a breeder in Texas/Louisiana/Oklahoma?

I have one. She is an amazing family/ lap dog. She can be protective, but I wouldn’t expect her to do anything but bark. She absolutely loves little kids. The only bad things about her is her grooming and to me she has a soft personality.

We raised them when I was young, wonderful pets and flush/retrievers, I know nothing bad about them. I almost bought one when I got the English Cocker I have now. I'll ask my Dad if he knows of any Texas breeders, the one I considered was out of either Miss or Alabama.

They are GREAT dogs!!! We are on our second and couldn't ask for a better dog. I believe they are called Texas Springers. It was in the McKinney and the colony area. Lots of energy and they need room to run. Always looking to please and constantly strive to learn. They are very teachable and loving animals as well as protective. Great around kids as well. I highly recommend the breed. We have had better luck with the females than the males. The male I had would get a little grumpy every once in a while.

I had one. It was my favorite dog ever until I got my current lab.

Buckley was a handsome dog. He would 'sing' for you on command. Very sweet personality. Nuts about retrieving. He was my first attempt at training a retriever at 19 years old. He got to where he would take blind casts and stuff. However, I waited too long to introduce him to real shotguns. He was great w the starting pistol but the first time we took him on a hunt, he retrieved the first couple after some hesitation. After that we let loose on a huge group and he locked up. Like, wouldnt move at all. I had to go back and carry him out on my shoulders about 1/4 of a mile through the swamp in the dark. He was strictly a house dog after that.

Again, he was a great dog. Nuts about retrieving. Funny story. My brother in law was tossing the dummy around one day after we got back from a hunt (after the above incident). Brother in law and I fell asleep in the chairs on the porch, woke up an hr later and the dog had put the bumper in my brother in laws lap, and had not moved since. He was still waiting for the throw lol.

I would look towards the field bred Springers, as opposed to the show bred. There are considerable differences in type and temperament, between the two.

Had two. One was a great dog. He hunted hard and was great at finding downed birds. He bit my wife coming out of the kennel one day. Do not know what happened but he snapped. They call it springer rage. It happens. He didn't see the sun set. Hated to put him down. The other was a lap dog, she was fine, but lots of grooming.

My family had a beautiful male when I was young.
Raised from a pup, excellent flush dog.

We had a pool, neighborhood kids always over and we had to kennel him when other kids came around.
Maybe a little over protective, but he wasn't good around other kids.
                  Other than that, great dog.

Bought one after me and my wife got married, she turns 13 in January and has been the best and smartest dog I have ever been around. Loves the kids as well. Now she’s going deaf but can still hear a whistle. Highly recommend the breed.

My cousin had one. Highly inelegant dog.Always felt he was glad to see the wife and I when we came for a visit. Point being is while she had her pack, she welcomed us in.

This is my buddies dog, Jake. His tail did not stop wagging the whole time I was there, and was ALL ABOUT the tennis balls.

There is an English woman that lives down the road from me that raises them. She brought them here from England. She also runs Cypress Valley Shooting Preserve and hunts them there. They are cool little dogs with boundless energy, good with all people and hunting fools. She raises and sells them, both hunters and occasionally a non hunter.
