    new home owner AC question

    So I am a new home owner, well the house is about 20 years old but it's new to me. It's about a 2,600sf home and the outside AC unit with the fan has gone out in a big way. Like the capacitor shorted and explode in it. So the AC guy is talking to me now about replacing both units the one in the attic and the one outside to the tune of like $13k

    We don't have to do anything right now but I am just wondering if we have to do everything?

    Can I just do the outside AC unit? I don't really get how the outside and inside work together.

    We have owned the home for more then a year so the home warranty BS wont help us

    Maybe the best plan is to suck it up and do the whole thing. It did last 20 years after all.

    Likely the best thing to do is do the whole thing, especially if the indoor unit is original to the house.

    If you would like a free second opinion/estimate, I would be more than happy to come take a look (assuming bulverde is where you live). I work for Jon Wayne and have done system replacements for a bunch of TBHers.

      They do not have to be replaced @ the same time. The HVAC technology has gotten more efficient since your original ones were made so a whole new system will be more efficient & save on electrical. $13K sounds really high, though. Definitely get a few bids before going forward. All HVAC's aren't created equally so go w/the better brands (Trane or better).

        Most likely you need to both as the freon in the old unit will not be compatible with the new unit. If the old freon were still available then just the one that went out could be replaced. It would not hurt to get another a/c person to look at it but I would expect the same answer. I am by no means an a/c person so get a professional opinion

          I spent 10k on a new unit for my downstairs. Heat pump setup and replaced it all for my downstairs. I'm in Bulverde as well. We used Canyon Lake Air, I believe. Take Bowhntrmatt on his offer and get 2 or 3 prices on it.

          I would do it all at once if I were you. Are you going to want to have the inside unit done in July or August? Bite the bullet and get it over with.

            $13K sounds high as long as they aren't talking about a lot of duct work. As mentioned, get on yelp, find some folks, and get them in for other bids.

              We are looking at replacing two 3.5 ton units in our 20 year old house. We are being quoted in the 15K range for both units (Trane).

                This. I have two units. And upstairs system and downstairs system. Compressor went out on downstairs unit. AC guy said inside component in the attic was just fine and only replaced outside unit. About $4000. $13k sounds high to me as well and just because your outside part is shot doesn’t mean the inside one is too.

                My unit was about 12 years old.

                      Why not just replace the outdoor fan motor and the capacitor and let her run in? Be a lot cheaper than a complete new system

                        My neighbor just had two 5 ton and one slightly smaller unit (think 4 ton) Lennox XC25s installed for $21.5K. Highly regarded installer (friend of mine). I guess price varies on who you know and region.

                          Sounds a little high.
                          Get several estimates and make sure you're getting quoted for the same efficiency rating.
                          We replaced our 5 ton unit(compressor and air handler w/ electric heat) in Jan '17 and it was $6800 total.

                            New fan motor and capacitor and you are out the door for a several hundred dollars...just because it is old, does not mean it NEEDS replaced. I am in the fix it rather than replace it crowd more often than not.
