This passed weekend I was able to go on a hunt with my dad, my brother, and a couple friends. We left Lufkin about 4:00 on Thursday afternoon, putting us at the hunting property just after 10:00. We met our guide Nathan, and made a little game plan for the morning.
Out of the five of us there, I was the only one bowhunting. So, I opted to go sit in a bow blind at the back of the place. There had been an old 11 point back there that Nathan said was getting run down. This was the deer I decided to target.
Anxious for the target rich environment that Nathan had described, I was restless for most of the night. We woke up to a cool morning with a bright moon. I got settled into my blind about 25 mins before legal shooting light.
Not long after Nathan got out of ear shot, the first deer made his appearance in the moonlight. It was the eleven point that I was targeting. He is easy to identify with a kicker off his G2 that angles forward. I still had a solid 20 minute wait for good shooting/camera light. He fed there with a few other deer till just about showtime, and then a doe came up to eat that he felt the need to harass around out of my shooting view for awhile.
I kept getting eyes on the buck, and even in bow range a couple times just not at the right angle or not stopping when I needed him to etc. When I finally thought he was offering a shot a bully of an eight point came in a ran him off. I finished the morning hunt seeing plenty of deer, and getting busted by some axis bucks.
That afternoon was very windy. The forecast showed it to calm down about the last hour of daylight. With that wind I was in no hurry to get back in the blind. Nathan dropped me in the blind about 4:15 and made a line of hand corn at the 15 yard mark. At 4:40 the first deer to come in was that 11 point. He came straight to that corn line and faced me eating for awhile offering no shot. He finally turned broadside and started walking across my field of view. I adjusted my camera, drew my bow, and took my shot.
I would have thought the shot was a little high but it did great. The buck immediately sprayed blood and I could see it all over the ground from inside the blind. This was my first kill with the Wasp Jack Hammer and I was impressed!! The buck probably made it 80 yards an piled up with a double lung shot.
Now as fun as my bow hunt was that is not what made this hunt so special for me. I will tell that story below this video.

As I mentioned, my Dad was on this trip. He was able to kill a little eight point buck that first morning with his rifle. With us both killing bucks it took the pressure off and allowed us to get in the blind together and do some hunting that next morning.
This is hard to say, but at almost 28 years old I had never been in a deer blind with my Dad until this weekend. My parents divorced when I was very young. My father was a horrible alcoholic that I rarely got to see, and got to where I never wanted to see. Thank the lord my Dad has been sober for almost six years now. He is now a hard worker, and a great grandfather to my boys. It took me awhile to come around and forgive, but we are now at a great place and we were both excited to hunt together.
Dad, isn't a bow hunter so I grabbed my rifle and got in a blind with him. Honestly we were really just after axis does, but not long into the morning's hunt I spotted a nice 8 point buck hot on a doe. I was hoping to get Dad a shot at this buck, because it would have probably been his biggest buck to date. However, the deer wouldn't offer him a shot(I really think he was saying this so I would shoot it). As the deer was headed out I was able to get a shot off and made a good hit on the buck(Unfortunately I wasn't able to get the kill shot on the camera at that angle of the blind). After the shot, it was pretty emotional in the blind this moment was long overdue.
We got my buck back to camp for some good pics. I looked at Dad and said were not done yet it is your turn this afternoon, and he just grinned! That afternoon Nathan took us back to the same spot I had shot my 11 point, but we climbed in the rifle blind instead. We only carried my gun, because I told Dad I wanted him to use it. We didn't see a deer until the feeder went off at 5:00. We were first visited by several does and smaller eight points. My dad, was ready to shoot another one of those little 8s when I told him, "no we're going to get you a good one!"
We had plenty of action. We even saw a beautiful fox have a standoff with one of the eight points. As it got late evening I spotted a bigger buck coming out, and told Dad to get the gun this is your buck. The buck made his way in and out of the brush making it hard on my anxious dad to get a shot off. He finally came back out in the road and I stopped him long enough for Dad to floor him! Once again another emotional moment in the blind and we got out to get his buck. We have never been in a deer stand together, and we had just killed two nice bucks on the same day.
