    Alligator Hide Tanning/Use

I recently saw a thread about asking what to do with an alligator hide. This raised a question in my mind. I recently did an alligator hunt in LA. The guide kept the hide to send to the government for inspection. He is telling me it will be $1200-$1400 to get a 7' belly cut gator hide tanned. This seems very high to me, is this the going rate?

Secondly i was looking at getting a set of boots made from the hide. Everywhere in Houston is charging $2000+ for a custom boot even when you supply the hide. This also seems outrageous. Is this the normal cost of this? Anyone you'd recommend?

    Thanks

I had my entire gator tanned a few years ago (9 ft female) and I thought it was around $300. Looks awesome too.

I believe you are hearing the truth, when I checked around a few years ago it was outrageous! Luckily a friend of mine did them for me, they are hard tanned but I love them the way they are. BUTTT sending them to the state?? Never heard of that, but I can tell ya the states are very protective with their Gators

We just got 11 back from the tannery at about 400 each.

Something crazy going on like he sold your hide and hopes you will just let it go at those prices. He can buy you a small tanned skin and still make money if you insist. I would probably just ask for my skin back and find someone else.

Two years ago I was on a gator hunt in Georgia. Got a nice 7'4" one.
But a few weeks before the hunt I received in the mail solicitations form two Gator hide tanning services.( Guess Georgia DNR sells their list of who got gator tags?) Both were in the $800-1000 range to have tanned. That discouraged me enough to leave the hide with our unpaid friend who took us out. There are not too many places that tan gator hides. So be careful who you send it to.

That sounds fishy. I sent my 9’er to Sebring Tannery in Florida and it was a couple hundred bucks. Had boots made out of them in Houston, they look awesome.

When I killed my gators at JD Murphy and Sea rim , the state employees, were very helpful and gave us a list of local places to skinners, and a list of places to ship them for tanning which we used
                        And I think I paid $400 per unit, ( all 7-9 footers) 6 gators in 2 years

I also used these guys http://amtan.com/tanning-cost.html in Georgia
