Sounds like you’re describing a Sika; although these ones are smaller..

My thoughts too. That’s why I wondered if they just wondered in. Dybowski sika is my guess.

So, this guy created – that’s right I said created – a new breed of deer, and people everywhere are baffled by the sight of this thing. Apparently, a vet from Canada went all the way to China and crossbred a Chinese sika and an elk, and got this strange-looking hybrid species: Folks on Facbook …

It’s high fenced. I’ll see if I can get a pic this weekend.

Dubowski Sika are pretty good sized critters. Might be what you are seeing.

While searching around for an answer to the original question last night, I came across something else of interest. This is a verified case of axis interbreeding with Sika:

PubMed® comprises more than 38 million citations for biomedical literature from MEDLINE, life science journals, and online books. Citations may include links to full text content from PubMed Central and publisher web sites.

Since elk and Sika can interbreed, and Axis and Sika can interbreed, it makes it seem at least possible that Axis and Elk could interbreed.

A friend of mine has a hog Deer stag who is breeding her axis does. That is a cross I have seen photos of. As far as an elk cross I don't think so.

This was a HF Elk/ Red Stag cross.

I say was.. as he is now on the wall and was darn good eating for about a year.

Axis and red stag cannot cross! Dyboski sika and stag would create what you have photos of though.

Well that definitely isn't a fallow. Interesting

Sika don't have black tipped ears and they generally have a wedge shaped face.
