    Warthogs in South Texas

Not sure if it's been posted, a friend of mine just sent me a picture he got off of Facebook with a guy that shot a Warthog somewhere down South Texas. Congrats to him.

They’ve been down there for years and there’s a thread every few months about them.

Not harm done but yes there’s a survivable free range population down around the Chap which is pretty cool

Lol. They don’t reproduce anything like our pigs so I doubt they will spread much if any. They also don’t get nearly as big so I doubt they could compete well for habitat.

They don't compete with feral hogs much at all for habitat. They don't reproduce like feral hogs but I can guarantee they will spread far and wide before it's all said and done. It won't be a rapid expansion like we have seen of feral hogs the last 20 years due to the warthogs longer gestation period, average litter size, and maturity rate.

Think about axis deer in the hill country. They were introduced in the 60's and they have maybe 1-3 fawns per year? Now look at the axis population. Warthogs have 2-4 piglets/year so do the math. Also, their gestation period is shorter than that of an Axis deer.
