As a career you want to go civil service. Try Corpus. Good pay, benefits, and retirement. San Antonio also but real hard to get into. Upwards of 2000 applicants take the test every yrar.

It would be nice to volunteer to see if you like it but being 34, time is working against you. I would apply for all civil service depts you can and try and get on and go through their training academy. Might as well get paid to go through training than paying for it your self.Comment

Corpus is a good department. You come out of the academy Firefighter/Paramedic. The hiring process seems to take close to a year. I would test everywhere I could that didn't require certification prior to employment. You're getting close to age cutoff.Comment

I would think there is plenty of demand here in the valley the way we are growing...I don't think you'll have to leave the area.
I also understand there are lots of opportunities coming around the brownsville ship channel with new construction going up for the LNG & supposedly a steel mill of sorts is going in.
I drove down there several months ago and that whole place is a city within itself been so long since I've seen it.Comment
