    What Age for Crossbow?

Looking at some Black Friday Week Deals and I seen some good deals on crossbows. I am kicking around the idea of getting my son a crossbow for Christmas to get him started in the hunting side of archery. He will be 4 before Christmas gets here.

What are your guys thoughts on starting kiddos with crossbows? What age do you guys think is good starting point?

All depends on the kid but if he shows interest and wants to try then get after it. My son killed his first with a crossbow at age 6. It’s awesome getting an animal in close and watching their nerves. Mine couldn’t pull the trigger on the bow at first.

Depend on maturity level of the kid. I got my son his crossbow this past September for his 6th birthday.

My son killed his 1st deer with a crossbow at 5. We had it on a caldwell field pod. I pointed it at feeder and when the deer showed up he did the rest.

Both of mine started with a crossbow at 6. Great for teaching them to be quiet and getting the animals really close.

About a week before!! Lol. He had been shooting BB guns and 22 for a while at that point so it was easy for him

mine both started on the crossbow held by the Caldwell field pod. They could shoot 1 inch groups at 30 yards within a couple of days. My son was easy to transfer to hunting with him. I guess video games are good for something. My daughter we had to work by shooting the block at different places out of the blind. She picked it up pretty quick after that. It is bad to be a doe or pig in front of either one of them now.

However old I could trust they're not going to have a digit above the string and get it lopped off.

IMHO killing an animal is not trivial. Your gonna pull the trigger and the animal is gonna die with a big hole in it. Kids have to be mature enough to understand that and appreciate they just took a life. My kids started at different ages just due to this. My son was a blood thirsty 6 year when he shot his first deer while my girls waited a little later like 10.

Once they reach the maturity level then it is a matter of practice.

Good luck to you and your son.

This is what I did including the field pod. That thing is worth it's weight in gold and then some. I can't remember their age though but both of mine's first pigs were with a crossbow. My oldest also shot his first deer with one. I think 4 is plenty old depending on maturity. There are a ton of benefits.
                        • Safety - They won't be able to shoot it without you there, cocking it for them and helping them do it right
                        • Shooting Habits - Crossbows are great since there is no boom or recoil. You can stress the fundamentals which in my opinion will transfer to a rifle rather than learning on a rifle and having the noise or recoil affect them.
                        • Distance - As others have stated, this gets them used to being up close, shot placement, etc.
