You are not mistaken. For a given bullet weight/design the 6.5 will have better SD and BC.

I looked at the Federal Ballistics calculator to compare the 7mm-08 to the 6.5CM. With Federal Fusion 140Gr. ammo in both calibers, the 7mm-08 drops less, has less wind drift, is faster, and carries more energy at 400 yards with a 100 yard zero. I am not sure how accurate the calculator is, but these numbers are interesting. I am a 7mm-08 fan, and that would be my choice. I know the 6.5CM will put a deer in the dirt just fine, but I have watched a few animals shot with one, and I am less than impressed. Like others said, small entrance and exit holes with quality ammo (hornady, federal, etc...). Even if it is better at 1000 yards, it is a moot point for me as I won't ever take a shot like that with my hunting rifle. My $.02...

A buddy was telling me that the Creedmore is designed to perform better at farther distances, and does not open up right at normal distances. At first I called BS on this since IMO that is up to the bullet, but then I got to thinking about the two deer my wife shot last year. Both poked through like a pencil shooting 6.5 Creedmore Whitetail bullets, and left no blood. Neither went far, but I was concerned about the lack of blood.

Looking to get a Tikka T3X on order ASAP, just need to decide on caliber!
Better? If you want to take an off the rack rifle and shoot long range the 6.5 CM is better, yes. You have factory rifles with fast twist barrels and high BC loads readily available for doing just that. It's what the CM was designed to do and do with low recoil. If you want a hunting rifle and are going to kill most of your deer and do most of your shooting at more moderate ranges then the 7mm-08 offers you more bullet options and a larger frontal area. I don't think either one is bad, just depends on what you like.

Pick a good bullet for what you are trying to do and for the distances and velocities you are trying to do it, put it where it needs to go and you'll kill deer with either one.

Im wanting a 7mm08, the want gets worse everyday. But, I don't need one. The 7mm08 also comes with heavier grain bullets, up to 180 I believe, thats store bought.

And he's wrong. For the same weight bullet between two different calibers the smaller diameter bullet will have the higher SD and BC.

I own both . If you want to shoot paper 6.5 does the best I've ever seen with factory ammo. If you are deer hunting 7 08 is what I would use with Sierra game Kings.

                      I had a 7/08 and I might get another one. I won't buy a Creedmore. I bought the 6.5 PRC instead.

I have both and hunt whitetail and pigs with both. I think the 7mm08 is as good a round as any for hunting these animals and will usually drop them in their tracks with a decent shot. The 6.5 has killed everything I have made a half decent shot on with the farthest track being about 30 yards. My 13 year old son shoots my 6.5. During youth weekend he shot about a 50 lb pig and it blew an exit hole out of it about 4 inches in diameter. The bullet then hit a second 50 lb pig and dropped both of them on the spot. About 20 minutes later he shot a decent sized East Texas doe and the 6.5 blew a large exit hole out of her about the same size as the pigs exit hole. If you are using the correct ammo for your application the 6.5 is a good round. You don't use the same ammo for shooting deer at 150 yards that you do for shooting paper at 600 yards.

I have both. I have shot deer with both. Both dropped the deer in their tracks.

With the right bullet, and the right shot placement, the deer won’t have a clue whether you shot them with a 6.5 or 7mm08.

It’s also my experience that I can find more variety of ammo for 6.5 CM off the shelf at physical stores (vs online).

I read a stat that said the CM bullets are only averaging clean kills 17.8% of the time on ungulates, whereas the 7mm-08 is closer to 100%.

Take that for what it's worth, but I'm lying.
