First Duck Hunt on New Property

My dad, brother, and I were fortunate enough to purchase 25 acres out near Paris, TX a couple months ago. Ive had deer feeders going with corn and seeing a couple deer. But I was most excited to duck hunt and see if it held ducks. We've looked at a couple pieces of land but my main catch was that it had to have some sort of water feature for duck hunting.

    Hunt Recap:

I got out to the little pond about 45 minutes before shooting light.. I knew the pond was deep but didn't know how deep. I took my little bass buggy out and threw decoys in a U shape following the bank. (the pond was a lot deeper than i thought so by the end of the hunt my decoys decided to float all around the pond like a Jackson Pollock Painting). As soon as i got to my spot i could hear a bunch of wood ducks calling back in the brush. DUCKS! That's all I needed. Just hearing ducks out there was music to my ears. So as shooting light came all the wood ducks started coming off the roost and flying over me. I was able to pop 3. Duke was able to retrieve all 3 after chasing 1 injured one around the pond for a while.(Those are his favorite). After all the wood ducks flared up there were no birds flying for about 45 minutes. Out of nowhere 2 mergansers landed right in front of me. I shot the male and the female flew up and landed back down and was able to hit her too. So after about another 45 minutes of seeing no birds flying i packed up.

I got back to my truck and decided to take some drone pics of the property. I flew it up above the pond and there were already 6 new ducks sitting in it....of course..that's how it always goes. So i took some pictures and filled some feeders that were running low. As i was pulling my truck out to leave a group of about 15 mallards was circling the pond and eventually landed in it right where i was sitting. I now know maybe to sit a little longer out there.

It was awesome to see action like that on your own property. Its something that you always dream of and when it finally happens its the best. Hopefully the pond stays full of ducks and the big bucks come in!

Happy Hunting to all my fellow hunter in Texas!

Nothing wrong with a wood duck hole and that hunt. I would mount that merganser pair, they will taint your sausage anyway.

Awesome to do that on your own place. I agree that the second pic should be on the wall.

I have wrapped a lot of things in bacon, marinated and smoked the rest of what wasn't wrapped. Those mergansers are terrible. We soaked them in ice salt water and changed the water out everyday. They still taste rank (to put it in G rating)They make excellent wall décor for sure.
