I guided a guy on a cow hunt yesterday on a friend’s ranch. The hunter insisted on using his revolver: a Magnum Research BFR 475 Linebaugh. We drove and glassed for quite awhile, and eventually spotted a group of cows in a valley. We made our way through the brush and switchgrass, and got to a good clearing. We waited until there was a clear, broadside shot on an older cow, and ranged it at 52 yards. He shot, and the cow made it about four steps and collapsed. Field dressing showed the shot went above the heart, but took out both lungs. The bullet completely passed through. I think he said he was shooting a 400 grain XTP, which has been discontinued. I was ready to shoot with a backup rifle, but that was not necessary.
