What causes a skunk to spray

Sitting in the blind and started smelling a skunk spray.. curious what would’ve made him let loose?? Being harassed by something??

They don't have to spray to stink. Probably just close by.

Their eyesight is horrendous during daylight hours. It could have been anything.

I've head shot a few at close range in the daylight with a 22 pistol and while they dont typically spray, they do stink. The green goo will ooze out after they lose muscle tone. I moved a dead one way out of camp only to have the wind shift around and odorize everything we owned.

If they arent around camp, I leave them alone.
