Also a big thing is producing a crop, being grains, hay, or livestock for market. The differing government programs that most farmers/ranchers can participate in allow a little more to it than the guy that has 5 acres, 3 horses, and a milk cow. NRCS says I'm a farmer/rancher



I have never been able to find that a business needs to make a profit 3 out of 5 years in actual IRS guidelines or publications.
