I've eaten a couple that we didn't find until the next morning and it was not below 50. LOL.

I'll hang one overnight in mid 40's. Once the deer's cool, I'll even leave it out up to about 65, hung in the shade. On the other hand, in the OP scenario, I won't leave one hang from live/hot unless it's below 50.

Anytime, I just don't leave it in direct sunlight. I also have a plan to get it to a more suitable place asap. Once you get the innards out it's not likely to spoil very quickly unless there's no breeze and a direct heat source (sun) concentrating the heat.

This is what I follow now. I used to be a lot more cautious about it, but after big game hunting and not having access to ice chests or walk in coolers for days at a time, I've learned that meat doesn't need to get fridge level cold right away.

45 or lower was always my number but while hunting Nebraska I witnessed mule deer being hung, in a barn, in upper 60 degree temps, for 3 days, and to my shock and surprise the meat was still good.. Very good actually.. They fried some up.. This was done by locals.. They just didn't understand why I was in such of a hurry to get mine on ice..

I'm going to say it takes a bit longer than that. I can gut it in 5 minutes and be doing other stuff like watching football. LOL.

As long as it is dry, in the shade, and wind can get to it, much higher temps than 40 would be fine.

                        Probably even over 60

My Texas brain sometimes overrides my out west brain.
We’ve left elk hanging into the 50’s at night and pushing the 80’s packing out during the day.

Always heard below 50 is good. I typically let them hang when it’s cooler than that just in case.
