    Trouble with cows

Well my opening day was spent repairing my feeder and panels! Got a call from my buddy Friday night saying that 5 of the feeders on our lease, including mine, had been destroyed by cows. I was headed out there early Saturday morning anyway. So, I got there way before sunrise, figured I’d sit in the blind till day break with hopes of seeing something. Once sunrise came & past I surveyed the damage. Cows pushed one hog panel completely down, bending t-post & ripping one out of the ground. Then somehow knocked over my feeder breaking legs & rolling the barrel around. Had to run to Lowe’s for new legs & linger rebar to wire them to. Got back & spent the rest of the day repairing everything back to working condition. How do you guys keep the menacing cows from doing this?

I never used panels. Three strands of barbed wire always seemed to work just fine.

I actually had cows pick up a feeder on there back last year and carry it off for about 20 yds. I put up 3 trand barb wire and now they just look from the outside for about 30 min and right before dark. I hate cows. They are only good for ribeyes. I'm buying a slingshot this week because my arm hurts from throwing rocks all weekend.

Hog panel to a cow is a stick to step over. Full sized panels... or braces and fence.

        Or remove feeder

I got sick of driving tposts and just started using a smaller barrel feeder hung way up in a tree. They still get some corn but at least they dont break my stuff

The drought from early July until mid October hurt. Cows will be a problem all deer season long. JMO and I am a cattle rancher.

3-4 strands of barbed wire, stretched. Don’t use T-posts on corners. Wire needs to be tight.

Thanks for all the advice! May have to run some barb wire!

Now that they have found that those things have a treat in them, you probably can't put a stop to it. It is much easier for them to rob a feeder than it is to get out and find food, considering the lack of rain.

we have the strangest cows this season... they will occasionally nap near/under the feeder and walk by the feeders daily, but not mess with it. but we can not keep a trail cam standing for more than 4 days! we had to build barbed wire pens with a 3ft radius around our cameras.

we use winch up feeders with the spinner unit about 7-8ft off the ground. then drive a T post in at the same angle as each leg and use barbed wire to wire the leg to the T post.
