    Fixing Broken Antlers on Mounts

Curious as to everyone's opinion. Do you fix broken points on deer when you get them mounted? In my mind, if I shot a deer that was broken off it is what it is. When I get him mounted I am not going to add inches to him because then that isn't the deer I shot.

    Yall's opinion?

The last 8pt I shot with a rifle, 22 yrs ago, I had mounted as he was. Broken brow tine on his right side. He's the same as when he came in that morning, other than the fact he is dead!!! I don't see the need to change anything about them.

I even have a 9pt cull in a european, just from the fact of how that hunt played out. I look at it and means something, just the way it is.

If it's broke, it's broke. Unless you broke it somehow loading it up or something. I want the deer mounted exactly like he was in the wild. Shows character and that he was a fighter.

Only way I’d get it fixed is if it got broken after the kill. Other than that, no, keep the antlers as they were.

I never get them fixed but then again I almost never have one mounted either.

I can see both sides. I shot a buck we had lots of pics of. He broke his right brow tine in the few days from the most recent pic, to when I shot him. I fixed that one... Didn't even realize it was broke until I picked him up. You could tell it was freshly broken. Other than that kind of situation it is what it is for me. Only way I'd like to fix it is if I know what it was before I shot it.

No. If I see a trophy deer has broken his tines then I don't shoot. Any other deer it wouldn't matter to me if they are broken or not.

Nope. Just doesn’t seem right to start adding inches on a deer. It certainly doesn’t add to the score no matter what you wanna tell folks it scored.

I think the same way the OP does. I have a kudu that has a bout 9” off the tip of one horn. Mounted it just like that. The only one I have ever had fixed was an elk that broke a tine off when he fell over dead after I shot him. It was there when I shot him though.

I've had a couple that had a badly broken tine fixed. "Inches" don't matter to me. But having the mount look better was my reason. I still have the LDPs with the broke tines. I have others that have more minor breaks that don't really detract from the look of the mount, so I didn't have them fixed.

I also had a mount fall from the wall and break a couple tines. I picked up all the pieces and superglued them back together as best I could, but there were still some voids. I had that filled and repaired.

I have some on the wall with fixed tines and some still broke. My decision maker is based on how I see the deer in my mind. If I had been following the deer on camera or in person and I knew him with all his points it gets fixed. If I don't know what he looked liked with full head gear or have no history with him broken is the way he stays.

I want to honor the deer the best I can.

I had one fixed once. The deer was a short tine 10 but had identical tines growing off the inside of the main beams that were both about 5”. Those two points were exactly why i killed the deer. The character and unique as of the deer. He had broken it off sometime within a day or two before i shot him. I didn't did it back to tell people it scored more or to make it look bigger. I added it back because of the uniqueness of the deer and character which is why i chose to hunt that deer in the first place. Now had it just been the top of a regular tine or just a regular tine that was broken then I wouldn’t touch it.

The deer would be a book deer with or without the tine added back but i honestly dont care about having my name in a book. The only people that see the deer are people that are over to the house anyway.

Fixing one that's broke is one thing. If you were to lengthen existing tines or add tines that never existed....well, that would be pretty lame.
