    Range finder

Bought a new Bushnell range finder. Using it this weekend it would read yardage of bushes, the corn feeder , etc. but would not read a live deer. The deer were at around 140 yards (next to the feeder I ranged) and it would not read their distance. Anyone had this issue - makes it pretty useless IMO

I bought a $ 50 tasco range finder that does the same thing. Not sure why it is but it is what it is.

Deer are soft money reflective targets. The lasers on lesser RFs don’t read easily off them. Reflective targets are much easier for RFs to hit off of.

The range listed on the rangefinder is for reflective targets which deer are not and they are small to boot. In my limited experience your only going to get about 1/3 the rated range on a deer. I had a bushnell and it wouldn't even shoot through netting. If your looking for a good rangefinder at a decent price I'd recommend the Sig Kilo line. I have an older 2000 model and it will do deer out to 7-800 yards, trees out to 1800, and buildings way past the rated 2000 yards.

thanks guys - I am going to send back to Bushnell and get a refund - they promote this RF for hunting - BS IMO

If you can find a Kilo 2000 used for about $200 you’ll be very hard pressed to beat it for the money. It’ll give you plenty of room to grow if you ever decide to tinker with longer shots as well. I can’t say that I’ve ever gotten 700+ on deer with one, but I’ve gotten 500-650 with them plenty.

I have a Vortex Ranger and have been extremely happy with it. I paid less than 300 for it.

I put corn lines out every ten yards. The one my deer is eating at tells me all I need to know.

But I still own two range finders
