    Hate a thief

So i was hunting in SNF this weekend and i had some weird stuff happen. On Saturday, i hunted an area i have many times before and put a trail camera 20 yards from my tree after the morning hunt to leave there to see if anything comes by when I'm not there during the week.

Fast forward to Sunday morning, i sneak into my stand a little over an hour before sunrise and sit till 9:30 and decide i want to move farther in.

    So,

    9:30 descend from tree.
9:40 Pack everything up and proceed to game camera
9:42ish made a mock scrape in front of the camera while looking back at it to make sure i was in view of it.
9:50 walk farther in slowly to find a tree.
10:00 find a tree, setup the stand
10:14 walking back out made it to where the camera WAS and the SOB was gone...

and yes i am positive it was the right tree, it had the mock scrape and everything in front of it.

That means somebody watched me get down and sneak over and snag my camera right from under my nose in broad daylight.

Now unless it was bigfoot, that is my only guess as to what happened!

I've had almost the exact same thing happen at LBJ Grasslands before. Set the cam after my evening hunt. Went to check cam the next morning after the AM hunt and it was gone.

I started using python locks after that and haven't had any issues at all.

It's very aggravating. I've found several cameras before on public land and never felt the urge to steal them. I actually don't mind finding them so I know where not to hunt since people are that area.

Had a similar experience. Took a day off work to hunt some public land close to the house. Hiked about 3/4 mile back and hung my stand in the dark for the morning hunt. I was back in some thick stuff on the edge of bedding area along a rub line. I even locked my stand with a cable when I got down at noon. Came back at 2:00, sucker was gone. Somebody was watching me that morning. I'm guessing they watched me setup, and I ****** them off, so they stole my brand new stand.......still makes me angry. Haven't left a stand in the woods since then.

I come across stuff all the time when scouting, and I leave it alone. I may report GPS cooridinates if some goober decides to make a place his own personal deer lease with permanent stand for the season, feeder and all. But for the most part I move on, and find a new spot. There's plenty of places to hunt, and I know what it feels like be messed with, or have a hunt messed up. Still I guess it was my mistake. Pack it in, Pack it out.

That's one step below having your wheels stolen while you're driving down the road.

I'm always relieved when I find my camera where I left it on public. Mostly because chances are no one has been through there if it wasn't stolen.

I'd bet they beat you in the stand. Probably watched you the whole time when you came in with a light, got down with hunter orange on, having their hunter orange removed you never noticed them. You may have angered them when you got down at 9:30 and messed up their hunt. Then they stole your camera in hopes you wouldn't return to that area. You're probably in a good spot. Don't get too discouraged.
