    Hinge Help for BBQ

Looking for the best option on hinges for the BBQ/Smoker I am building. Bought some from the metal store that are a two piece barrel hinge. They didnt work very well. Not sure what they are made out of but didnt hold up very well to the heat. Looks like the grinder will get to eat soon

Just curious on what others have used on heavy doors for the smokers. The doors that are cut outs of the main pipe are 3/8s. Thanks for any help.

SOME BIG WIDE CHAIN like bike chain only WIDER! I have some that looks like 6 bicycly chains side by side that Im gonna use for my hinge! Works great

These are the barrel hinges that I didnt like. The flange tapers so thin that they cant take the heat. Im sure it is welder/operator experience that is causing the problemsClick image for larger version

Thanks for the ideas. How do you keep the pipe and rod from binding? Seems like they warp or bend over time. Have ya'll ever built the teardrop shaped ones? Seems like there are three per hinge. The one in the middle welds to the lid and the other outer two weld to the chamber. Dont know what would go between them to keep from grinding.

I've used the barrel style and the teardrop style and never had any problems with either. Nothing between the teardrops, just run a 3/8" bolt through the holes and you're set. For the Barrel style, it's hard to tell from the pics since there's nothing to compare them to, but the ones you have seem to be the medium sized ones. They make those in about 4-5 different sizes and I use the biggest ones. There's a lot more flange to weld to, and you can also come in on the back side and run a good bead on the back. Once you weld them on, keep opening and closing them until they cool completely or they could warp from the heat of welding and stick on you.

Use a piano hinge- you can get them from one foot long to six feet log. Get one a little shorter than your door will be. Cut the length of the hinge on the side where the hinge will go without going all the way to the corners. Weld the hinge in place then cut the corners out. This will help keeping things from warping.
